As Camp Wightman staff, we believe that spirit, mind, and body must be nourished richly and simultaneously. We value music and art just as much as sports. We foster respect for self, for others, and for the created world of which we are stewards. We believe the strongest Christian community can arise out of the strongest individuality when trust, tolerance, and understanding are the cornerstones. Above all, we love to have fun because smiles and laughter and joyful hearts are signs that God holds our community together.
Top Ten Reasons You Want to Work at Wightman this Summer!
#10. Not a job, a home People who work here don’t come for the money though it is nice to get paid. It’s about people - being with them as they play, laugh, learn, struggle, and grow. Your fellow staff will become your second family. People can have a job, career, or a calling. We’re looking for folks who have a calling.
#9. We are interested in your personal and professional growth
Skill enhancements are often reported: organization, motivating others, problem solving, leadership, emotional intelligence, prioritizing, decision making, risk management, working with groups, behavior management, project management, first aid, teambuilding, responsibility, self-confidence, child development, skill integration, and knowledge of more games and activities than you thought existed. We can also teach you almost any program area, so you can teach it to children.
Self-definition / career selection: It is common for staff to say they've learned more about themselves in two months than in several years before being here. Will this job change your life? Probably.
#8. Friends you’ll keep for life Fast and deep friendships are made living and working with your teammates. People often keep in contact for years, and our alumni are a testament to friendships kept for decades. Also, more than a few have found their life’s mate while at Camp Wightman.
#7. Connection with children Working so closely with children, it is inevitable that you’ll form real friendships. You’ll be instrumental in their spiritual, physical, social, and mental development. Help foster self-confidence, independence, life-long recreational skills, safe risk taking, an appreciation for community, a healthy lifestyle, caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, environmental awareness, and fun! And above all else, be an exemplar of the Christian faith (even with all your own questions and failings) that they seek to emulate -- you will have the opportunity to point them to Jesus.
#6. Memories Your "mental" photo album will be full of pictures that you will treasure for the rest of your life. You will also make lifelong memories for children.
#5. Fun! The time of your life? That's what staff tell us, so we are only reporting the facts.
#4. Work and play in a 24/7 Christian community Work with staff and volunteers of all ages from around the world, and children from all walks of life. You’ll be with high-quality staff who survived a rigorous selection process and share your faith. Your suggestions are heard, discussed, and often used. People pitch in and share the load. People belong. We rely on God's grace to help us create the Christian community we desire.
#3. Healthy living Our days are often long, our activities are rigorous, and you’ll sleep well, eat well, and get plenty of exercise!
#2. Beautiful Surroundings Camp Wightman has many treasures...Billings Lake, miles of hiking trails, nature that sometimes gets too close for comfort, beautiful rocks and two islands, diverse forests, and the smoke of campfires among 250+ acres in the southeast corner of Connecticut. On a clear night, our view of the heavens is simply breathtaking.
#1. Your own spiritual growth You’ll find that your work requires utter dependence on God's grace and mercy. As you rely on the Holy Spirit's work in your life, you will strengthen your relationship with God and become a stronger disciple! You get to worship while you work (most of the time you can whistle if you want, too).
